Nail fungus is actually a fungal infection impacting the toenails or fingernails. It is also called onychomycosis. The toenail is commonly affected by this nail infection. The Tea Tree oil or Melaleuca oil has been used by the indigenous Aborigines in Australia as traditional medicine. They crush the leaves and use them as inhalation for treatment of simple coughs and colds. The Tea Tree leaves are taken from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. It was during the 1920’s when the antimicrobial properties of Tea Tree oil was discovered. At that time, its use as an oil extract started to be produced and used as a natural remedy.
Today, Tea Tree oil is a very well known remedy for nail fungus. It is also a natural antiseptic that can be used to treat ailments and many other infections. The active substance in the Tea Tree oil would be terpinen-4-oil; this was discovered to fight bacteria and fungi. It is advisable to use a 100% Tea Tree oil extract for better results. In treating nail fungi, apply the Tea Tree oil on the affected nail surface. Apply on the surrounding tissues as well. The application on the skin gives a barrier and also prevents further growth of the fungi. Applying of Tea Tree oil must be 2-3 times a day. The treatment should continue up to 6 months and keep in mind to never miss an application, or the fungi growth will recur again.
Before application of Tea Tree oil, test first for sensitivity or allergic reactions by applying on the inner arm. Some people might be allergic and could develop certain allergic reactions. The Tea Tree oil is a topical treatment. It is toxic when swallowed. Keep it away from children or pets. Once treatment is completed, bear in mind proper maintenance of your toenails. Nails must always be clean, properly trimmed and dry. Wear appropriate socks that allow your feet to breathe. The feet must be given time to dry, in case your feet is sweaty. Avoid trimming the skin around the nails; it might give an entry point for germs or fungi. You should also avoid going barefoot in public places, especially showers or swimming pools. For prevention of nail fungus, you have to maintain cleanliness and proper hygiene at all times.
